Our advice for a hassle-free trip

Everything we wish we had known before our first trip to Japan.

Japan is still very cash-based. Withdraw yen at 7-Eleven or Japan Post ATMs — the ones that reliably accept foreign cards. Keep ¥100 coins for lockers and vending machines.

The last carriage is often the least crowded. Shinkansen have non-reserved seats in the first cars — cheaper if you queue early. IC cards (Suica/Pasmo) also work in konbini and vending machines, and can live on your iPhone.

Restaurants with a ticket machine at the door are usually great value — no Japanese needed. At lunch, go for teishoku set meals (¥800–1200). Konbini onigiri and bento are genuinely good for ¥500–700.

Check-in is often 15:00 and check-out 10:00 — strict. Use Ecbo Cloak or station coin lockers for luggage. In a ryokan, never wear shoes inside, and mind the separate toilet slippers.

Tattoos are refused in most public onsen — look for tattoo-friendly ones or book a private kashikiri bath. You wash BEFORE entering the bath, and the small towel never goes in the water.

Keep your voice down on trains and avoid phone calls. There are few public bins — carry a small bag for your trash. Don’t tip; it can cause confusion. A slight bow goes a long way.

Forward heavy luggage hotel-to-hotel with takkyubin (Yamato) for a few thousand yen. Carry a small hand towel — many toilets have no dryer. Tap water is safe to drink everywhere.
