Which eSIM for Japan? Prices compared

We checked the public prices of big Japan eSIM brands and put them next to ours: same data, same validity, every price dated. We sell one of these eSIMs, so we also show you our method and its limits.

What about unlimited?

Some brands mostly sell unlimited data by the day. Here are their prices, checked on 3 Nov 2026.

Brand7 days15 days30 days
UbigiNo plan€39.00€65.00
SailyNo plan€43.68No plan
Airalo€24.50€44.50€64.00
Plan Japon€28.49€46.49€79.49
Holafly€25.50€46.90€68.90

Our biggest plan: 50 GB valid for 30 days, at €28.90. That’s plenty for maps, messages and social media. If you stream a lot of video, unlimited may be worth it.

For each data amount, you see the price of each offer checked and its validity. Our prices come straight from our catalogue, at the moment you read the page. Everyone else’s carry the date they were checked.

To compare two different data amounts, look at the price per GB: the plan’s price divided by its number of GB. It’s the simplest way to see what you’re really paying.

Method

How we check prices

The same method every time, so that we compare like with like.

  1. On official websites

We record the public price shown on each brand’s official website: the one everyone sees, including all taxes, with no discount code.

  2. Same data, same validity

We put plans side by side with the same amount of data and the same validity as ours: 7 days for 1 GB, 30 days above that. A brand that doesn’t sell that plan doesn’t appear for that amount.

  3. One-off purchase

We only include plans you buy once, with no subscription. Unlimited data, sold by the number of days, has its own box.

  4. Dated and checked

Each survey carries its date, and it’s checked, with evidence, before it’s shown.

  5. In euros

A price shown in dollars is converted into euros, at the rate given with the table.

Below the table, you’ll find the date of the survey and the websites checked. A brand may have changed its prices since: the date is there to remind you, and it changes with each new survey.

Why the public price? Because it’s the only one you can check yourself, on the brand’s website, with no account and no code.

How to choose

How to choose an eSIM for Japan, beyond price

Price matters, but it doesn’t tell you everything. Here’s what to check for each offer, and why.

Your phone first

An eSIM only works on a phone that supports eSIM and is unlocked. Check that your phone is compatible before you compare anything else.

The network

Japan has four operators with their own network: NTT docomo, au (KDDI), SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile. Ask which one the eSIM uses: that’s what makes your connection, especially in the mountains, on small islands and in the countryside.

Look at the IP address too. An eSIM that routes your data through another country doesn’t give you a Japanese IP address: the connection can be slower, and some Japanese websites or apps may not work properly.

The data

The amount of data included, in GB: we always compare identical amounts. Also check what happens when your data runs out, and read the fair use policy if there is one: above a daily amount, some offers slow your speed right down.

The validity

How long the plan lasts, and when it starts: at purchase, at installation or at your first connection. A validity that starts too early means days you’ve paid for and can’t use.

Then check how the days are counted. You land on a Monday evening and fly home the following Monday morning: that’s 8 calendar days, but only 7 periods of 24 hours.

Hotspot

Allowed or not. It lets you connect a laptop or help out a friend, and it uses data fast. To connect a whole group to one device, compare with a router too: eSIM vs pocket WiFi.

Phone number and WhatsApp

Most travel eSIMs give you data only, with no phone number. Your usual SIM keeps your number for texts, like your bank’s codes, and WhatsApp runs on the eSIM’s data.

Top-ups

Possible or not, and how: in an app, on a website, or by buying a new eSIM. Useful if you run low on data along the way.

Support

The channel, the hours and the languages. With an 8 or 9-hour time difference, a help desk that only answers during UK office hours is asleep during your morning in Japan.

Installation and tracking

How you install the eSIM, and whether an app shows you the data you have left. That’s what saves you guessing how much is left before a day of sightseeing.

Words worth knowing

  • Price per GB: the plan’s price divided by its amount of data.
  • Validity: the period during which you can use your data.
  • Fair use policy: a rule that slows your speed above a certain amount of data, often per day.
  • Hotspot: your phone acts as a Wi-Fi access point for another device.
  • Japanese IP address: the address that shows websites you’re connecting from Japan.

By trip

What to look at for your trip

The right plan depends on how long you’re staying and what you use your phone for.

  • A week, light useMaps, messages, a few photos: a small data allowance can be enough. Look mainly at the validity and the price per GB.
  • Two weeks or moreFor moderate use, aim for a mid-sized allowance, and check that the validity covers your whole stay.
  • Video, social media or sharingGo for a large allowance, and check that hotspot use is allowed.
  • First trip to JapanLook at the support: who answers, when, and in which language.

Travelling as a group? One large plan, shared from a single phone, can replace several small ones. Check that hotspot use is allowed, and that the battery can keep up.

Where we stand

Where Mobile Companion fits

We sell eSIMs for Japan, so this comparison isn’t neutral, and we’d rather say so.

Our prices are in the table, read live from our catalogue. For the other criteria, here’s what you get with us:

  • Network: NTT docomo, in 5G where it’s available, with a Japanese IP address.
  • Validity: it starts when you first connect in Japan, not when you buy.
  • Hotspot: allowed.
  • Top-ups: from the app or your account on the website.
  • Support: a real person on WhatsApp, 24/7, in English and French.
  • Installation: 1 minute, from the app or with the QR code.

And what we don’t do: our eSIM doesn’t come with a phone number. It’s for data only, and your usual SIM keeps your number.

Our plans’ data amounts and validity are on our Japan eSIM page. And we don’t run anyone down: if another offer suits your trip better, the table will show you.

Limits

The limits of this comparison

An honest comparison also says what it doesn’t show.

  • Prices change. A checked price may have changed since its date. Always check on the brand’s website before you buy.
  • Promo codes aren’t counted. We record the price shown to everyone, not one reserved for a few.
  • Not the whole market is here. There are many eSIM sellers: we compare a selection of well-known brands, not all of them.
  • Unlimited is separate. An unlimited plan can’t be compared with a plan in GB: it has its own box, with no savings percentage.
  • The network isn’t everything. Your connection also depends on where you are and on your phone.
  • Terms change. Hotspot, top-ups or support: what we say about them is valid on the date of the survey.
  • Your experience isn’t measured. We compare offers, not how the connection feels, which also depends on your route and how you use your phone.

FAQ

Your questions about the comparison

What’s the best eSIM for Japan?

There’s no winner for everyone: it’s the one whose data, validity and price suit your trip, on a solid Japanese network. The table shows prices checked and dated, for the same data and validity, and our criteria help you decide.

Which eSIM for two weeks in Japan?

An eSIM valid for at least 15 days, or 30 days to keep a margin. Then pick the data from how you use your phone: our guide on how much data you need helps.

Is unlimited data worth it in Japan?

For maps, messages and social media, a plan in GB is plenty. Unlimited can be worth it if you watch a lot of video or share your connection every day: its prices are in the “What about unlimited?” box.

Are the prices up to date?

Each price carries the date it was checked, shown with the table. A brand may have changed its prices since: check its website before you buy.

Is Mobile Companion neutral?

No, and we say so: we sell eSIMs for Japan. That’s why our method and our survey dates are public.

How are prices checked?

On the brands’ official websites, for the same amount of data, with the date of the survey. The method section above gives every detail.

Why is a brand missing for some amounts?

Because it doesn’t sell that amount of data with the same validity as ours, as a one-off purchase. We never compare two different amounts or validities.

Do the prices include tax?

Yes: we record prices including all taxes, like the ones you pay at checkout.

Why are prices in euros?

Our prices are in euros, so the table compares in euros. When you pay with a UK card, your bank converts the amount into pounds and may charge a fee.

Why not compare every eSIM?

There are lots of them, and their offers change often. We’d rather have a selection of well-known brands, checked carefully and dated, than a long list that’s soon out of date.

What about roaming on my UK plan?

This table compares eSIMs for Japan. For roaming, check what your UK plan includes in Japan, and what it costs, before you go.

What matters, apart from price?

The network, the validity, hotspot use, top-ups and support: the criteria section above explains each one.
